I have an issue with one of our HP LaserJet 4001's. I can only get it to print when I open and close the toner door. Otherwise, the printer just sits there with the printing message on the LCD screen. Nothing will come out until the toner door is opened and closed. I have already tried to delete and recreate the printer and I have changed the driver to the universal driver. Any other ideas on how to fix this issue?

Hi @mlinfante,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like there is an issue with the HP LaserJet 4001 where the printer only prints after opening and closing the toner door. This is an unusual behavior and can be due to a few potential reasons. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can take to resolve this issue:
1. Check the Toner Cartridge and Door Sensors
- Inspect the Toner Cartridge: Ensure that the toner cartridge is properly seated and installed correctly. Sometimes, an improperly seated toner cartridge can cause the printer to misbehave.
- Clean the Sensors: The printer might have sensors that detect whether the toner door is closed. Dust or debris on these sensors can cause issues. Carefully clean any visible sensors with a soft cloth.
2. Firmware Update
- Update Firmware: Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. Manufacturers often release firmware updates to fix bugs and improve performance.
- You can download the latest firmware from the HP support website.
3. Power Cycle the Printer
- Perform a Hard Reset: Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the internal electronics and clear temporary issues.
4. Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions
- Inspect for Paper Jams: Even small paper fragments or obstructions inside the printer can cause problems. Thoroughly inspect the paper path and remove any obstructions.
5. Driver and Software Issues
- Reinstall Drivers: Although you have already changed the driver to the universal driver, try uninstalling the current driver completely and then reinstalling the specific driver for your printer model.
- You can find the specific drivers for your model on the HP support website.
6. Print Queue and Job Management
- Clear Print Queue: Sometimes, print jobs can get stuck in the queue. Clear the print queue and try printing a new document.
- Go to Devices and Printers > Right-click on your printer > See what's printing > Cancel all documents.
7. Printer Settings and Configurations
- Check Printer Settings: Verify that the printer settings are correct. Sometimes, incorrect settings can cause printing issues.
- Factory Reset: If none of the above steps work, consider performing a factory reset on the printer to restore it to its original settings. Check your printer's manual for instructions on how to do this.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
