My HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus keeps saying “There is a problem with the printer or ink system. I have turned it off and turned it back on. I removed the print head and ink cartridges, then put them back in. I can not find any other solutions to this problem.

Hi @Yorkmi,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the error message "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" on your HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus can be caused by several issues, including problems with the printhead, cartridges, or the printer's internal systems.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

1. Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for at least 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet and then to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer.

2. Check the Ink Cartridges

  • Make sure you are using genuine HP ink cartridges.
  • Open the printer and remove the ink cartridges.
  • Check for any signs of damage or leaks on the cartridges.
  • Reinsert the cartridges one by one, ensuring they are properly seated.

3. Clean the Printhead

  • Remove the printhead and clean the electrical contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Dry the contacts with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  • Reinstall the printhead and cartridges.

4. Update Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for firmware updates on the HP Support website.

5. Perform a Semi-Full Reset

This reset can clear many issues but will also reset some settings and preferences:

  • With the printer on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait for 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the wall outlet.
  • Press and hold the power button for 10-15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.

6. Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions

  • Open the printer and check for any paper jams or obstructions in the paper path.
  • Remove any visible paper or debris.

7. Service or Replace the Printhead

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, the printhead may be faulty and need to be replaced. You can order a replacement printhead. Follow the instructions provided with the new printhead for installation.
