HP Smart Tank 7602 All-in-One
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I tried to print something in color today but could only print in black and white.  The printer presets do not contain an option for COLOR.  The machine is fine and printed out a status report with beautiful color but the printer presets do not contain color so I cannot print anything in color. I tried updating the driver but it did nothing.  There are no error messages. I checked under System Preferences and looked at all the presets.  There is nothing for COLOR.

Thank you for your time on this.

@suzegeo, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like the issue is related to the printer settings or the macOS print dialog not showing the correct color options. Let’s try a few steps to troubleshoot and fix this:

1. Check Printer Settings:

Printer Settings on macOS:

Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

Select your HP Smart Tank 7602 and click on Options & Supplies.

Under Options, make sure the Color Printing option is selected. If it’s set to Black & White or Grayscale, it will print only in black and white.

2. Check Print Dialog Settings:

When you try to print, the print dialog will open.

In the Print dialog window, click on the drop-down menu that shows Presets.

Click on Show Details (if not already expanded) to see more print settings.

Look for a Color option under Color Options or Quality. Make sure it's set to Color and not Black & White or Grayscale.

3. Reset the Printer System (on macOS):

Sometimes resetting the printer system can fix strange printing issues.

Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.

Right-click (or Control-click) on the printer list and select Reset printing system.

Re-add your printer by clicking the + button, selecting your printer, and reinstalling the drivers.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only):

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Hi, it turned out that all I needed to do was delete the printer and reinstall it.  Reinstalling on a Mac is a bit different from what the instructions said.  All I had to do was add the printer back into the settings and then the presets contained color.  The main problem was that I was working too hard trying to follow the HP instructions.  I talked to someone at a local Apple store and they helped me.  All is well, thanks for the reply.
