My printer has toner - it printed the test page when I re-started.
The problem is not application dependent - I get the same output whether submitting a .pdf from AcrobatPro, a .docx from Word, or a .png from Preview.
The first page prints:
%!PS-Adobe-3.0
followed by (depending on the source software)
%APL_DSC_Encoding: UTF8
%APLProducer: (Version 12.6.1 (Build 21G217
or
%ADO_DSC_Encoding: UTF8
%%Title: Document1.pdf
%%Creator: (Adobe Acr
and then prints blank pages until the tray is empty or I power off.
Any ideas?

Has it ever worked with this OS? The issue would suggest that there is an issue with the driver using code that the printer simply cannot interpret. Have you tried any alternate drivers? I know options will be limited based on the model number as this doesn't have true PS built in like the 5MP did.

Thank you for your suggestions.
1. I don't know if it stopped working when I upgraded from Catalina to Monterey, (I can't remember when either event happened, and I can't remember whether I ever used Big Sur) but you might be correct
2. HP Smart can't find the printer
3. https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-laserjet-5p-mp-printer-series/25481 says thee is no driver for this operating system
Any more ideas? before I go looking for an old Mac which I can downgrade to Catalina ...
