My printer prints color but will not print black text.  I changed the xl black print cartridge to a new one, but it didn't help.  I cleaned the printer heads with app, but test paper just printed color blocks.  Please help!

Hi @calm179

Welcome to HP Support Forums. A really great platform for posting all your questions and finding solutions.

I understand that you are unable to Print in Black and have already replaced the Black Cartridge.

I'd like to help.

I suggest you remove the Black Cartridge, clean the electrical contacts with a Lint-Free cloth and reinstall it firmly.

Also perform a Printer Reset.

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Then once again use the Automated Tool to clean the Printhead.

  1. On the product control panel, press Setup ().

  2. Press the Down Arrow button () to select Tools, and then press OK.

  3. Press the Down Arrow button () to select Clean Printhead, and then press OK. The cleaning process begins.

NOTE: Mechanical noises during the cleaning process are normal. A test page prints when the cleaning process finishes.

If the printhead is badly clogged, you might need to clean the printhead several times to restore normal print quality.

No, this did not work.  All colors show up but the black rectangle is all white.

I'm having the same problem.  Have tried "clean printhead" dozens of times.  Didn't help.  Have tried using alcohol on printhead. Didn't help.  Have tried 2 brand new black HP cartridges.  Didn't help.

Just wondered if you have had any luck fixing this problem?   The "HP help" hasn't been able to solve my problem.  They first send out the generic list of things to do that you also got and that's it.  They seem to disappear after that.

It's frustrating because this printer is just outside the warranty period.

Let me know if you have had any luck 😆
