Printer HP Envy 4524 keeps printing black and white. Changed both catridges, updated and reinstalled the driver, unplugged and plugged the device. The problem seems to occur only on my laptop, with the other computer it doesn't have this issue. It seems that when I change in the settings to print in color it just doesn't save  or recognize it.

@Milenafonseca, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Thanks for the detailed breakdown — it sounds like you’ve already covered the essential hardware and driver steps. Since the HP Envy 4524 prints in color from other computers, but not from your laptop, and your settings changes aren’t sticking, the issue is very likely related to software or settings on your laptop only. Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve it:

Check and Set the Default Printing Preferences

Sometimes changing print settings via the Print dialog doesn’t persist. Try setting color printing as default in the printer settings:

Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.

Right-click on the HP Envy 4520 series printer > click Printing Preferences.

In the Paper/Quality tab, make sure Color is selected instead of Black & White or Grayscale.

Click Apply > OK.

Delete and Reinstall the Printer (Properly)

Remove the Printer:

Windows: Devices and Printers > Right-click > Remove Device.

Delete Driver Packages (optional but useful):

Windows: Run printmanagement.msc > Print Servers > Drivers > Right-click HP Envy > Remove.

Reinstall with Full Feature Software (not just AirPrint or Basic Driver):

Download from HP’s official site: HP ENVY 4524 All-in-One Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support

Check Application-Level Settings

Some applications (like Adobe Reader, Microsoft Word, Chrome) override system settings:

Try printing from multiple applications to see if the problem is app-specific.

In each app’s Print dialog, expand all advanced settings and make sure Color is selected.

Run HP Smart:

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
