Product: hp deskjet 1050
Operating System: macOS 10.14 Mojave

I've tried reinstalling everything. Tried deleting printer and adding it. One odd note is that my printer is 1050A but only 1050 shows up now in available printers. But my doc still says filter failed

Try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware 

 

HP Deskjet 1050 All-in-One Printer series - J410 for macOS 10.14 is not available from the HP website or Apple Software Update. However, Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) provides open-source basic print drivers for many printers that would otherwise not be supported in Mac OS X. To see if your printer is supported, go to Gutenprint drivers for more information.

 

NOTE: Gutenprint drivers are not supported by HP or Apple.
