@Fgiardina, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP DeskJet 4100e stays stuck in sleep mode and won’t wake up to print unless you unplug and reconnect it, the issue is likely related to firmware, power settings, or connectivity timeout settings. Here’s a structured approach to fix it:
Update Printer Firmware
- Go to HP Firmware Download page.
- Search for "HP DeskJet 4100e".
- Download and install the latest firmware update for your printer.
- This often fixes power management bugs like not waking up from sleep.
Disable “Auto Off” Feature (if available)
- On the printer control panel or via the HP Smart app:
- Open Settings > Preferences > Auto-Off.
- Turn off Auto-Off or set it to a longer delay.
Check Sleep Mode Timer
- From HP Smart app or Embedded Web Server (EWS) (access via printer IP in browser):
- Find Energy Settings or Sleep Mode settings.
- Increase the sleep timer or disable deep sleep if available.
Set a Static IP Address
- Printers on dynamic IP sometimes go unreachable when asleep.
- Access your printer’s EWS (type its IP address into a browser).
- Go to Network > IPv4 Configuration and set a manual IP outside your router's DHCP range.
Use a USB Cable Temporarily
- If the problem persists over Wi-Fi, use a USB cable to test printing.
- If it works, your Wi-Fi connection may be disrupted during sleep.
Reinstall the Printer in Windows/Mac
- Remove the printer from Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Restart your PC.
- Add the printer again via HP Smart app or “Add Printer”.
If none of the above works:
- Unplug the printer.
- Hold the Power button for 10–15 seconds.
- Plug it back in and wait for a full reboot.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
