Hi, I have a HP OfficeJEt 6962. I am at my wits end trying to print but it just won't. Everytime I try to print it gives the error of Cannot Print. Connect printer to update HP Instant Ink status. It was printing fine until about 1 week ago.

I do not have any wireless issue that I could tell. I could even see the EWS page when I put in the IP on my browser. I also tried connecting via USB etc.

I do not have a HP Instant Ink account. This is a used printer and I believe the previous owner may have had that. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it.

Pls help.

Hi @penangkia,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing is likely related to the printer's previous connection to the HP Instant Ink service. When a printer is enrolled in HP Instant Ink, it is connected to a subscription service that monitors ink levels and usage. If the previous owner had the printer enrolled in this service and canceled the subscription, the printer might be locked or restricted from printing until the subscription status is updated or the service is deactivated.

Here’s how you can resolve the issue:

Deactivate HP Instant Ink on the Printer:

  • Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS):
    • Since you can see the EWS page when you input the IP in your browser, navigate to the EWS page again.
    • Go to the Web Services tab (or similar, depending on your printer model).
    • Look for options related to HP Instant Ink. There might be an option to turn off or deactivate Web Services or HP Instant Ink.
  • Reset the Printer to Factory Settings:
    • Warning: This will erase all settings and reset the printer as if it were brand new.
    • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.
    • After resetting, the printer will restart. You may need to reconnect it to your network.

Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Sometimes, a firmware update can help resolve issues with services like HP Instant Ink.
  • You can download and install the latest firmware for your HP OfficeJet 6962 from the HP Support website.

Re-register the Printer (if needed):

  • If the printer is still trying to connect to HP Instant Ink, you might need to re-register the printer in your name. You can do this through the HP Smart app.
  • After registering, ensure that HP Instant Ink is not activated or remove any subscription links from the previous owner.

By following these steps, you should be able to bypass the HP Instant Ink status check and get your printer working again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
