HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer series
Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite

I was printing some things and then a message poped up to replace the ink cartridge. I replaced one and then it got stuck in printing canceled mode even though I didn't cancel the print job. I turned it off, unplugged it and then turned it back on. I came back on to the replace cartridge message so I replaced the other cartridge. It then went back to printing canceled but I didn't cancel the print job. It stuck on printing canceled and I can't get it off that screen.

Hi @rphillip

Welcome to HP Forums. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

I understand that a Print Job is stuck in the printing Queue.

I could help.

Let's start with a Printer Reset.

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed.

Next, Reset the Printing System.

  1. Click the Apple menu, and then click System Preferences.

  2. Click Printers & Scanners, Print & Scan, or Print & Fax.

  3. Right-click (or Control + click) anywhere inside the Printers window, and then click Reset printing system.

Figure : Clicking Reset printing system

    Image: Click Reset printing system
  4. Click Reset or OK.

  5. If prompted, type your username and password, and then click OK.

    The printing system resets.

  6. Turn off the printer, wait 5 seconds, and then turn on the printer.

  7. Wait until the printer is idle and silent.

  8. In the Printers window on the Mac, click the Add button .

  9. Select your printer from the list, and then click Add.

It might take a few seconds before your printer displays in the Printers list.

I followed all the instructions, reset my printer. Then added printer and it went into the same mode as before. When I tried to print it said to reinsert the cartridge (colored) I have done this numerous times. Then when I try to print again it gives same message and when I try to cancel it go into canceled mode and will not stop until unplugged. So frustrated. This just started today. I do not have a colored cartridge to replace as I am on HP auto renew cartridges and I have not received a colored cartridge.
