I have recently changed my internet to airband which is a much better internet provider. Except every time I print from my HP office jet printer it cuts out half way through printing and then I can’t print for ages. I have to uninstall and reinstall the printer, switch on and off the router and spend hours ‘playing’ with it all before I then attempt to print again

any help please

Hi @TJL1979

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing that, and I’m truly sorry you’re facing such a disruptive issue—when printing causes your internet to drop, it’s more than inconvenient, especially when you’ve upgraded to a better provider like Airband.

This behavior often stems from how the printer interacts with the router’s network protocols, especially if the router uses dual-band Wi-Fi or advanced traffic management.

Let’s walk through a few steps to help stabilize your connection and prevent future dropouts:

Assign a Static IP to the Printer

  • Log into your router’s admin panel.
  • Reserve a static IP for your printer under DHCP Settings or Connected Devices.
  • This prevents IP conflicts and stabilizes communication.

Separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz Bands

  • If your router uses the same SSID for both bands, rename them (e.g., Home_2.4G and Home_5G).
  • Connect the printer to the 2.4GHz band, which is more stable for IoT devices.

Disable IPv6 on the Printer

  • Access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) by typing its IP address into a browser.
  • Go to Network Settings > Advanced and disable IPv6.
  • Save and restart the printer.

Update Printer Firmware

Turn Off Sleep Mode

  • In the EWS or printer control panel, set Sleep Mode to Never or Extended.
  • This prevents the printer from dropping off the network mid-job.

Use HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool (Windows)

  • In the HP Smart app, click Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Let it run a scan—it will automatically fix common connection issues.
You can also access this tool on HP’s support page if needed.

Check Router QoS and Firewall Settings

  • Disable any Quality of Service (QoS) rules that prioritize traffic away from the printer.
  • Ensure the printer’s MAC address isn’t blocked or restricted.

Let’s get your printer and internet working in harmony.
