This is a brand new printer, just out of the box today. The setup went fine. Even used it to print and scan with no trouble. Then, when I wasn't looking, within an hour after plugging it in, it decided it needed an automatic update. Now the screen has a continuously spinning circle under which it says "updating..." and below that is "00". It has been like that now for about 3 hours. I tried the off button. - won't turn off. I'm afraid to just unplug it because I think that might be how I ruined my last printer.
Can anybody help?

Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand that your printer is stuck on the update screen, I am glad to assist you.
Is the printer power cable connected directly wall outlet?
If not, follow these steps:-
Perform a power reset to do a hard rest on the printer
- Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet and printer without any surge protector.
- Turn on the printer.
Update the printer firmware to install the latest updates
