HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-in-One Printer

Printer just will  not print. It makes noises like it is printing, but it shoots out a blank page each time. I have inserted brand new HP cartridges so that isn't a problem. Sometimes it says there is a paper jam, but it printed off a Printer Alignment Page with no problem. I am baffled about the problem. Have checked thoroughly for a paper jam and found none. I don't want to throw this unit out in the trash...I want to get it working.

Hi @brenden,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is facing an issue that is affecting its ability to print properly. Since you've already replaced the cartridges and checked for paper jams, here are a few additional troubleshooting steps that might help resolve the problem.

Check the Ink Cartridges

  • Ensure the ink cartridges are properly installed and seated in place.
  • Even though the cartridges are new, sometimes the protective tape might not be fully removed or there might be an issue with the chip on the cartridges. Try reseating them and check for any visible issues.

Clean the Printhead

  • Since it's shooting out blank pages, the printhead might be clogged. You can try to clean it using the printer's cleaning function:
    • Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance or Tools > Clean Printhead.
    • Alternatively, clean the printhead manually with a lint-free cloth dampened with warm water. Be careful not to touch the electrical contacts or nozzles.

Run a Printer Diagnostic

  • On the printer's control panel, navigate to Tools or Settings, then look for the Printer Diagnostics or Print Quality Troubleshooter to see if it can detect any problems.
  • This may help identify if there's an issue with the printhead or alignment.

Check for Firmware Updates

  • Sometimes, firmware issues can cause printing problems. Check if there’s a firmware update available for your printer through the printer's Control Panel or the HP support website.

Reset the Printer

  • Try performing a hard reset of the printer:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    • Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.

Perform a Printer Reset

  • If the above steps don’t help, you might need to reset the printer to its factory settings:
    • Go to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.
    • Be aware that this will erase any custom settings on the printer.

Check for Obstructions or Faulty Sensors

  • Even though you didn’t find a paper jam, check the paper path carefully for any small bits of paper or debris that could be triggering false paper jam errors.
  • Check the paper sensors in the printer (usually located inside near the paper path) to ensure they are clean and functioning correctly.

Test the Printer on a Different Computer or Network

  • If the printer is connected to a computer via Wi-Fi or USB, test it with a different device to rule out any software or driver issues.

Try a Manual Printhead Alignment

  • Even though the alignment page printed fine, a manual printhead alignment could help if it's out of alignment:
    • Go to Settings > Tools > Align Printhead.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
