We have a printer that is an HP Officejet Pro 8600 all-in-one. It has been working faithfully for years, but yesterday this message showed up "Printer Failure. There is a problem with the printer or ink system. Turn the printer off, then on. If problem persists, contact HP".
This occurred last night immediately after installing a genuine (and expensive) HP Yellow Ink cartridge. There wasn't a problem with installation.
I have unplugged the printer and let it sit, then re-plugged it in. I have also checked the path of the ink carriage (?) and all seems to look good.
I have not been able to turn the printer off and then on again because the power button has not worked on this printer for quite a long time.
This printer is essential for work and we are interested in any insights for how to get it running again. Thank you!

Hi @Lou529
Welcome to the HP support community.
I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP printer, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting for Printer Failure on HP Officejet Pro 8600
Check for Ink Cartridge Issues
- Turn off the printer (if possible using the power button or by unplugging it).
- Open the ink cartridge access door and check the newly installed yellow ink cartridge. Ensure that it is inserted correctly and is not defective.
- Remove the yellow ink cartridge and inspect it for any visible issues (e.g., leaks, damage, or protective tape left on).
- Reinstall the cartridge ensuring it clicks into place. Sometimes cartridges can look installed but aren't fully seated.
Reset the Printer (Unplugging Method)
- Unplug the printer from the power source.
- Wait for about 60 seconds. This allows the printer to fully reset and clears temporary issues that might be causing the failure.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on (if you can, using the power button or by reconnecting the power).
Check for Ink System Failure
- On the printer's display, look for a specific error code or message related to the ink system failure (sometimes it will specify "Ink System Failure" or give a code).
- If there is a code or message, note it down and search for it on the HP Support website for more specific guidance.
Clean the Printhead
- On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup > Printer Maintenance (or similar option).
- Choose the option to clean the printhead. This can help clear any blockages that could be interfering with the ink flow.
- After the cleaning cycle completes, try printing a test page to see if the issue is resolved.
Perform a Hard Reset (With Power Button Non-Functional)
- Unplug the printer from the electrical outlet.
- Wait for about 1-2 minutes.
- Plug the printer back in while holding the Power button. This can sometimes initiate a hard reset without requiring the normal press of the power button.
- Let the printer go through the boot-up process and check if it’s functioning correctly after this reset.
Perform a Diagnostic Test Using HP Printer Tools
- Download the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP Support site and run the diagnostic tool. It can automatically detect and resolve printer issues, including those related to ink systems or power problems.
- You can also try HP Smart (if you have the app installed) to check for firmware updates and diagnose the issue.

Try a Different Yellow Cartridge
- Return or replace the yellow ink cartridge and test with another one to rule out any issues with the new cartridge.
Check for Internal Printer Blockages or Issues
- If the printer has been in use for a while, it's possible that something internal (such as the printhead or ink system components) has malfunctioned.
- You can gently inspect the area around the printhead for any visible blockages, debris, or buildup.
- Be cautious when handling the internal parts of the printer—avoid touching the electrical contacts or ink nozzles to prevent damage.
I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
