Hi @Viv1954,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Close Tray" error message on your HP Officejet 8040, despite the tray being closed, can be frustrating. Here are some steps you can try to resolve this issue.

Check the Tray:

  • Open the paper tray and ensure that there are no paper jams or obstructions inside.
  • Make sure the tray is properly seated in the printer. Remove it and reinsert it firmly.

Inspect the Tray Sensors:

  • Sometimes, the sensors that detect whether the tray is closed can get stuck or dirty. Use a flashlight to locate the sensors (usually small plastic or metal tabs) around the tray area and gently clean them with a soft cloth or a cotton swab.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset the error message.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. You can do this through the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP support website.

Reset the Printer:

  • If the issue persists, you can perform a factory reset on the printer. Note that this will reset all settings, so be prepared to reconfigure your printer after this step:
    1. Turn off the printer.
    2. Press and hold the "Cancel" button and the "Wireless" button at the same time.
    3. While holding these buttons, turn on the printer.
    4. Continue holding the buttons until the printer starts up completely.

Check for Software Conflicts:

  • Ensure that your printer drivers are up to date on your computer. Reinstall the drivers if necessary.

Try these steps, and hopefully, one of them will resolve the issue!

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
