HP 2542 performed well with my old Windows laptop, but keeps needing to be restatred using my new MacBook Air. Also can't get it to scan properly, nor airprint from my wife's Ipad.

Hi @BushwackerBill,
A warm welcome to HP Community!
It's possible that the wireless router is blocking or not able to forward multicast packet (Bonjour). Multicast packet (Bonjour) allows Apple devices to locate the printer on a WiFi network. Please contact your internet service provider or router manufacturer and check if the router is able to forward multicast packet. If the router is able to forward Bonjour packets then try the following steps:
1.) Use the following links to update software on Mac and iOS.
2.) Use the steps available here to update the printer firmware.
3.) Update router firmware, refer to router user guide for instructions.
Once you update software on Mac, iOS, router and printer firmware, restart printer, Mac and iOS device and then try to print. If issue persists, try the steps available here.
Let me know how it goes!
