Printer "freezes" during shutdown (either Scheduled or when ON/OFF button pressed).  When this happens, the only way to complete the shutdown is to disconnect power.  When power is reconnected and the printer is restarted, the printer emits an unusual and scary noise during startup.  Something harmful to the printer's mechanism happens.

This shutdown "freeze" happens more and more often lately.

Does printer need to be totally reset or updated with a new operating system?

Welcome to HP Forums. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.

I have gone through your Post and would like to help

Let's start with a printer reset

(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed

Then update the Firmware from this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-officejet-pro-8710-all-in-one-printer-series/790...

Let me know how it goes

Thank you and have a wonderful day 😊

Followed the instructions for reset and for firmware, even though firmware is not for my printer.  Couldn't open the firmware's .dmg file on my computer so the problem was not resolved.

We will attempt to update the Firmware directly from the Control Panel

Select the Setup, Service, or Settings menu, select Preferences, Printer Maintenance, or Tools if necessary, then select Web Services, Printer Update

If the issue persists we will attempt a Semi Full Reset

Keep me posted

I've tried this and the printer still does not shut down properly.

Thanks for keeping me posted

Let's try a Semi Full Reset. Since these steps are specific to your printer, I have sent you the instructions in a private message

Please check your private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile.

Next to your profile Name, you should see a little blue envelope

Thank you 😊
