Hi @JohnAP2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on. This reset can often clear temporary issues.

Check for Paper Jams:

  • Open the input and output trays and examine the paper path for any obstructions or jams.
  • Carefully remove any stuck paper if found.

Ink Cartridges Check:

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Ensure the cartridges are properly seated. If not, reseat them.
  • Check for any tape or packing material left on the cartridges.
  • If needed, replace any low or empty cartridges.

Software and Driver Updates:

  • Ensure that your printer's software and drivers are up to date. You can download the latest versions from the HP Support website.

Wi-Fi and Network Stability:

  • Verify if the printer is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network. Unstable connections could cause the printer to go offline.
  • Check the wireless connection settings and reconnect if necessary.

Resolve Specific Error Codes:

  • The presence of an error code on the display can guide specific troubleshooting. You may need to consult the user manual or HP's online resources for guidance on interpreting specific error codes.

Test with Direct Connection:

  • Try connecting the printer to your computer using a USB cable to determine if the issue persists. This can narrow down whether the issue is related to wireless connectivity.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your response.  I have tried all of these corrections previously.  None worked.  Each time I try something I have to wait about a day and a half before the lights start flashing again.  One thing I was told to do before was to turn off the printer, hold down the power button and press the info button 10 times to do a hard reset.  However, those instructions if I remember them correctly, did not work as the printer did not do a reset.  The  printer works fine for a day or two but eventually the lights start flashing and I have to reset it by pushing the power button once to reset it for a couple more days.  Very frustrating.

Hi @JohnAP2,

Thank you for the response.

If your printer’s firmware is glitched, you’ll need to push a clean firmware update using a cable:

Download firmware manually from HP’s official site:
HP DeskJet Plus 4140 Firmware Update

Connect the printer to your PC via USB cable.

Run the firmware file and install directly to the printer.

It forces fresh code into the printer and can fix deep software faults.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for your response.  I was able to download the firmware update but this printer does not have a usb connection.  Only the old type half oval type connection to connect the printer to the desktop.  I can try to order one of those and direct connect to the desktop once received.  The HP Smart App says my printer is up to date but it is connected through WiFi.  I will update once I get the correct cable.

thank you

I installed a printer cable and connected it to my desktop.  When i double click the firmware update it says my printer is up to date and does not install the firmware.  I did not delete the wifi version of the printer that is also attached via wifi on the desktop.  Should I delete that printer and only go with the direct connected one and see if it will accept new firmware?

Thank you

John
