Microsoft Windows 11

I'm asking for someone else and wasn't present when the problem occured; But alledgedly, the printer started an update on it's own, and after it was done, displayed the above error: printhead problem, error code 621813. We tried rebooting it, wich caused it to reset to factory defaults. That wouldn't be a problem for us, but it still displayed this error.

Next, we unplugged the power cable and left it for about 45 minutes, plugged it back in, and it still displays this error. It shows "?" and "OK" as options to press; either of those leads back to this error, it's not possible to access the printer menu. It is also not accessible via the network (Browser window/ip-address as url). This presents a problem, since anything can only be done over the printer display panel.

Edit: We opened the printer, removed the cartridges and cleaned the printhead contacts carefully, then put everything back together again. It took a minute while the printer tested during the next startup, but didn't help unfortunately. The cartridges are original HP products.

Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

@ATVISL, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

It sounds like you're dealing with a tricky issue. The error code 621813 on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8022 typically refers to a printhead problem. Even though you've already tried some basic steps like rebooting, unplugging the printer, and cleaning the printhead contacts, there are still some troubleshooting steps you can try. Here's a comprehensive list of things to try:

Check for Paper Jams or Obstructions

Paper jams or other small obstructions in the printer could be causing the issue. Open the printer and carefully check for any jammed paper or foreign objects inside, especially around the printhead and carriage area.

Gently move the carriage (the part holding the printhead) left and right to ensure it's not stuck.

Perform a Hard Reset (Power Reset)

Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Wait for at least 60 seconds.

While it's unplugged, press and hold the power button on the printer for 30 seconds to discharge any remaining electrical charge.

Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Reinstall the Ink Cartridges

Open the printer and carefully remove the ink cartridges.

Inspect the cartridges for any visible damage or leakage.

Clean the metal contacts on the cartridges with a soft, lint-free cloth. Be gentle when cleaning.

After cleaning, carefully reinsert the cartridges, ensuring they are seated correctly.

Check the Printhead

Remove the printhead (if possible, depending on your model).

Check for any visible damage to the printhead itself.

Clean the printhead contacts using a soft, lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water. Dry it completely before reinserting it.

If the printhead appears damaged or is not functioning properly, you may need to replace it.

Update Printer Firmware

If the printer is still not accessible via the network interface (browser), the issue may be caused by the update that was initiated.

If you’re able to get the printer back online at any point, check for any firmware updates:

Open the HP Smart app or use the printer’s display screen to check for available updates.

If possible, perform a firmware update to ensure the printer has the latest version installed.

Sorry for the late response - In my case, it's actually a hardware defect. Seems like print ran out of a cartridge, onto the printhead. Unfortunately, I couldn't check it right away, since the device wasn't mine, so I only noticed it a few days ago.

Thanks anyway for the help! 🙂
