When I choose copy a photo on photo paper, it says that photo tray doesn't have paper. That's because I have letter-size photo paper in the regular tray. How do I bypass this?

Welcome to the HP Forums, this is a great location to get assistance! I read your post and see that you are unable to print photo from main tray and you are getting photo tray doesn't have paper error. I would like to help you resolve this issue.
However, I will need a few details to provide an accurate solution,
- When did this issue start?
- Did you do any changes to the printer?
- Are these HP Photo papers?
Meanwhile
Perform a power reset
- Turn on the printer, if it is not already on.
- Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
- With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
- Turn on the printer.
Check if this photo paper is supported by this printer, click here and check under the paper handling: https://hp.care/2K2Gijw
Reply with the result of the above-mentioned steps, for further assistance.
Cheers.

It is a new Envy Photo 7855 printer.I have copied documents with no problem. The paper in the main tray is HP Premium Plus Photo Paper, size 8.5X11. I have an 8X10 photo placed on the glass -- when I touch "copy" it says that I need to load photo paper into the paper tray.

Thanks for the reply.
I appreciate your time and effort.
I understand the issue better now.
Change the copy settings:
-
Touch Copy, Copy Document, or Copy Photo on the printer control panel, and then change any available basic settings as needed.
-
Touch Settings or the gear icon
to view advanced copy settings.
-
Tray Selection: Select the paper input tray with the paper you are using for your copies.

Thanks for the response.
Update the printer firmware
- Navigate to the printer update feature. Menu names and icons vary by printer.
- Select the Setup, Service, or Settings menu, select Preferences, Printer Maintenance, or Tools if necessary, then select Web Services, Printer Update, or LaserJet Update.
- If you are prompted to sign up or accept terms of service, follow any on-screen instructions to enable Web Services and setup automatic updates. This procedure sets up the printer's Internet connection so it can receive updates.
- If the printer does not automatically start the update process, select Check for Updates or a similar menu to start the update.
You can also refer this document for more steps to update the printer firmware: https://hp.care/2rHKwDD
