HP Office Jet Pro 8630
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Hello, I have a HP Office Jet Pro 8630 I have been using for the past few years.  When I am sending out invoices,  tray 1 has always been used for envelopes and tray 2 has always been used for paper.   It has always worked with not many issues.  The only time it has had any problems is when I had run out of paper in either tray and it would default to the next.  If this happened, tray 2 would print on envelopes or tray 1 the envelopes would print on paper and a mismatch error would come up.  Recently, paper has been getting jammed in the envelope tray and sometimes they would come out crooked.

So my issue now is that tray 1 will not print at all.  In face the envelopes print on tray 2 on regular paper, it doesn't even say mismatch or anything.  All the settings on my pc have the same settings, the envelope size is the same.  Its like tray 1 does not exist anymore.

Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

I would guess, without much evidence, that the printer needs to be cleaned - if the "automatic" cleaning cycle does not resolve the issue, you may need to clean the rollers inside the printer.

 Paper Jam Error

and, related:

An 'Out of Paper' Message Displays and the Printer Does Not Pick Up Paper for the HP Officejet Pro 8...

Other weirdness can include:

  • Paper that is too dry, too damp,
  • Paper in printer wrong size (not set in the printer control panel correctly)
  • Paper that is curled.

I realize none of these are likely - but they can be factors.  If all else fails to help, try different paper.

Once the printer is working correctly, the tray should be available.

Something MIGHT happen that would (possibly) be visible in the Properties

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Right-Click Printer > Printer Properties > tab Device Settings

For example...

Under Installable Options > Automatic Duplexing Unit > Select / Verify Installed > OK

What about the "tray swap" when one tray is empty?

I do not remember for sure, I no longer have my Officejet Pro 8630 installed -- as well as the "default" setup for paper defaults (shown in the example), you MIGHT be able to control whether the printer will swap out trays when one is empty.   Although I do not have an example of the setting for the tray action, I would guess (if such exists) the option is in EWS > Settings > Preferences > Tray Settings.

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Example - EWS - Officejet Pro 8630 - Settings > Preferences > Paper Settings

EWS_8630_Settings_Preferences_Paper-Settings_Custom_1EWS_8630_Settings_Preferences_Paper-Settings_Custom_1

General "double-check" places to look for anomalies...

Check / Adjust / Retain the Paper at the Printer Panel

Open Printer Tray,

If you have not yet done so, add desired paper type

Close Tray

IF applicable for your printer:

On the printer control panel, Click Modify (wording varies), set the paper size and type, Click OK

NOTE:  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down list, Select Custom

Set the Preferences

Make sure you have selected the Media (kind of paper), source (tray), and paper size in your printer settings.

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on your printer > Printing Preferences >

Tab Printing Shortcuts > Click / Highlight preferred shortcut > Click Apply > Click OK to exit

If the printer software supports the feature, change the settings as desired, then use “Save as” to create a Custom Shortcut.

OR

Windows key + S (search for) Printers and Scanners

Left-Click on (your) Printer > Manage >

Printing Preferences

Select a shortcut and / or set “preferred settings” for paper, source (tray), other settings

Optional (if / as available): Save As > enter a name for your custom shortcut

Click OK to save the preferences

If all else fails, consider that it might be beneficial:

Uninstall the printer software >

Restart the computer and log in >

Download-Save-install a fresh copy of the Full Feature Software.

Thanks for the reply.  I will read through this when I get back to the office tomorrow.

I did troubleshoot a few more things.  Originally I was printing from Quickbooks.  I tried to print from Word and got the same result.  Then I made tray 1 the default and it printed fine with regular paper.  So I really think its a printer issue or possibly a driver.  Either way thanks again for the feedback, I will update tomorrow.
