Printer suddenly stopped working wirelessly— see screenshots below.
Print status window indicates 'Printing - Filter failed'
System Preferences shows error/offline.
To troubleshoot I deleted both printers from System Prefs
Downloaded/installed new drivers.
USB connected to add printer back into System Prefs
Printer appears to work with USB connection
Printer Wifi sees my network. Double checked password. All good there.
Never seen the 'Printer - Filter failed' error message before.
Also checked another computer and got different error messages. Those screenshots are below too
Any guidance here?

The solution is to download (and install) this package (From HP FTP) which will update drivers AND THE CERTIFICATE:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/HP_Quick_Start/osx/Installations/Essentials/hp-printer-essen...
The install takes a bit. Let it run, even if it seems like it stalled out!
It is NOT the same as the driver package, Easy Start, or Easy Admin other people are recommending.
If the link comes up blank, try right clicking and saving it. If you install this package and still have trouble, try restarting. Then go about uninstalling your printer and reinstalling USING THIS METHOD ONLY: Apple Logo (Upper Left of Screen)/System Preferences/Printers & Scanners. Then restart your computer.
If you still can't find the printer, install the 5.1 driver package from HP: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1888?locale=en_US
Then restart and try to install again through the Printers & Scanners menu.
Easy Admin did nothing. Easy Startup did nothing. 5.1 drivers did nothing. This worked for me!
If this solved your issue, please thumbs up and mark as solved!

I have a very old (and until a couple days ago- reliable) HP 8600 and got this same message. I tried what had previously been suggested in these threads- it didn't work. Then I decided to "reset the factory defaults" and it fixed the error. Here were the steps I used:
1. Press and hold power button for 5 seconds
2. Press the "BL" button 4 times...on my printer the BL button is the "go back" button and it actually doesn't show up when you push the space where it lives but I pushed it anyway and it took me to the next step.
3. Touch Support Menu
4. Use right arrow to find "Reset Menu", hit OK
5. Use right arrow to find "Semi-Full Reset, hit OK
6. Printer automatically turns itself off at this point.
Then press power button to turn the printer back on.
I then deleted the 8600 from my printer system preference settings for printers/scanners and then had to use the HP set-up wizard on the printer to find my network and sign back on to it. I then tried printing and lo and behold it printed without any "Filter Failed" error. I hope it works for all of you!!!

Thank you @BryanCustomPure. It took a few restarts but the wireless is working again with one caveat— the process of installing that package from the ftp site resulted in the following pop-up:
It also pops up now every time I try to print. When I click 'OK' the pop-up returns for about 6 or 7 cycles then the document finally prints. Any suggestions how to stop that from happening?

Hi Bryan,
There wasn't a hp folder in the /Library/Printers folder. All available printers are just listed at the root level of that folder. I deleted: HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless All-In-One Printer - A909g. Restarted and getting that same pop-up error:

Bryan,
I have a filter fail issue also with my Officejet Pro 8600 Premium printer. I'm using macOS 10.13.6 (High Sierra). Does the link you provided in this string for Cataline OS only?
BTW, I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling drivers and firmware, wireless connections and USB connections to my iMac. Reset to default, etc., ...still getting the Filter fail message regardless of whether I tried a wireless connection or a USB connection to my computer.
This also happened several days after I downloaded a "defect fixes" update from Norton Safe Web.
