HP OfficeJet Pro 7720
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I am trying to print envelopes on a HP Officejet Pro 7720. I load the printer with the required envelope, change the printer settings as prompt by the printer screen (choosing from the menu, the same envelopes inserted in the print tray). I then, in Word, create the envelope mailing address and return address under the 'Mailings' tab (following the instructions posted by Microsoft to a T). I select in Word the envelope which matches the envelopes in the printer tray and the direction the envelope is facing to print. Then hit print.

The printer states it cannot print the envelope, as the print job is specifying A4 to be used - and promptly spits out the envelope unprinted. When A4 is added back into the printer, it will print.

Someone on the HP Community forum had the same problem with the HP 7720; and replied that he / she had solved the problem, as it had been an issue with Word; BUT did not set out what the answer or solution was to the problem.

I am using Windows 10 on a Surface Pro with O365 subscription.

I may not understand what you are doing.

What size are the envelopes you want to print?

Specifications lack the information for supported envelope size

Datasheet indicates that envelopes are supported:  Envelope (DL, C5, C6)

Custom Paper Size Form

If your envelope is not listed as a supported size in your printer software, you may need to create a Custom Paper Size form for your envelope.

Creating Custom Paper Sizes

  1. Availability depends on printer model and software and Operating System / Version.
  2. If the feature is at least partially supported the Custom Setup will be available in Devices and Printers OR in Printer Preferences.
  3. If the feature is fully supported, the custom form can be created AND then used with the printer software.

  • Devices and Printers > Print Server Properties

OR

  • Printer Preferences > Print Dialog > Paper / Quality > Custom setting box

Example 1

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Left-Click on your Printer one time to highlight >

Left-Click Print Server Properties (along the top ribbon)

Custom_Envelope_A9_1Custom_Envelope_A9_1

Example 2

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers >

Right-Click on your Printer > If necessary, select printer from drop down menu / list

Printing Preferences > tab Paper/Quality > Custom

Printing_Preferences_Custom_Envelope_7x5Printing_Preferences_Custom_Envelope_7x5

Depending on Printer Model / Software, changing the paper in the tray may require that the paper settings be adjusted on the printer control panel.

  • Open Tray > Remove existing paper, load new Paper > Check printer control panel: “Modify” > select Paper Size or “Custom” > OK

Print Envelope in Word

If your envelopes are other than the supported sizes, then in Word, set the envelope size as "Custom" and enter the dimensions of the envelope.

Change other options (addresses, font, font sizes, check / adjust feed),

When ready, click Print
