Hi @Jan4007,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here are some steps to troubleshoot and fix the issue of your HP OfficeJet 4520 printer printing very slowly and not finishing print jobs.
Check Printer Settings
- Print Quality: Ensure the print quality is set to Draft or Normal instead of Best.
- On your computer, go to the print settings and adjust the quality.
- Duplex Printing: If double-sided printing is enabled, it may slow down the printing process. Try disabling it temporarily.
Check for Large or Complex Documents
- Large files or documents with complex graphics may cause delays.
- Test with a simple text document to see if the issue persists.
Restart the Printer
- Turn off the printer and unplug it for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on. This can resolve minor software glitches.
Update the Printer Driver
- Windows:
- Go to Device Manager > Printers and update the driver.
- Alternatively, download the latest drivers from the HP Support website.
- Mac:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners, delete the printer, and add it back.
Check the Network Connection
- If connected via Wi-Fi, ensure the signal is strong and stable.
- Try moving the printer closer to the router or connect using a USB cable for a more stable connection.
Reset the Printing System (Mac Only)
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Right-click in the printer list and choose Reset printing system.
- Add the printer back and test again.
Clear Print Spooler (Windows Only)
- Open Services (type services.msc in the Windows search bar).
- Find and restart the Print Spooler service.
- Clear pending print jobs:
- Go to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS and delete all files in the folder.

Perform a Printer Reset
- Turn the printer on.
- Disconnect the power cable from the printer and the wall outlet.
- Wait 60 seconds and reconnect the power cable.
Check for Firmware Updates
- Access the printer’s Control Panel or use the HP Smart app to check for updates.
- Install any available firmware updates.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
