I have been using Avert labels for my products for years.  They have stopped using their wizard and I have had to upgrade my laptop.  Now I have to use their template, which I have done, but the printer is not printing them in the right alignment.  It is right on screen and on the print preview but nearly 2 cm out on the actual label sheet.  It is costing me a fortune and I can't sell anything without a label.  What is going wrong? Avery aren't being very helpful either.  I am printing via a word document.

@Booth74

Wow.  I just checked - the Avery Design and Print is indeed now only listed as an online tool.

My opinion:  This is an unexpected (and annoying) development.

I have not created anything using the online software.

I have worked with Avery Templates using Word.

I can offer a couple of ideas that may help or may be a complete waste of time.

Be Aware:

All the the following is being typed "on the fly" - the content is not proven or tested.

In General (in the past), Word can be used to create and then print the template data.

First thing, Search for the template you need / want

Word > File > New > Category / Tab "Office"

Enter the template name in the search bar

Search the list

So - Just checked...

This is a now particularly irritating and likely frustrating method - it appears that Avery has forcibly removed the vast cache of Avery template labels from this source.  I suspect the point is to protect Avery intellectual property or perhaps the data management was dropped for other reasons.  Unknown.

That said, there are still many, many templates in Word.  Assuming the templates match in size and structure, any of these might be compatible with one or more Avery paper products.  ?

Moving on...

Search for the template at the Avery site

Example Avery Template 8162

Download the template  to your computer in the .doc format

Open the downloaded template in Word

Enable Editing of the template

Edit the contents (add information to each label) > Save the file

Print the Template File

File > Print > Printer Properties >

Verify / Select Printer to be used >

Paper Type (Media) = Brochure  matte or glossy (or similar depending on your printer options)

Print Quality = Normal

Pages per Sheet = 1

Borderless = Off

Print on Both Sides = None

Click Print

NOTE:  Normally, the action would be this simple - presumably the margins are handled by the template structure.  If Avery is truly messing with the setup to discourage home-design and printing, then there could be hidden "gotcha" points, including those found in the margin requirements.

About Margins

As stated, the template should be handling the margins.

Normally you might find this setup Word > Tab Layout > Margins >

Find "Custom Margins" highlighted (selected)

Click (just below that setting) Custom Margins

"Page Setup" opens

Check the margins set for Top - Bottom - Left - Right sides

If any of the margins are smaller than the smallest margin allowed in your printer's Specifications,

then

the template will not print correctly (and may present and error).

Cancel out of the little menu

Check scaling for paper size in your region

The following has always been relevant - US <-> UK standard paper sizes are different

Depending on the template, it may be necessary to check / adjust the Word "Scale Content" setting.

Word Options Scale Content Setting

Document (label sheet) printing parameters may be sensitive to location, standard paper size settings, and / or the Office Software used to create / print the labels.

Contributed by ExBayford  - Thread My HP5030 does not align over the whole Avery C32011 page

Office 365, Avery Template C32011 (UK template): Scale Content setting must be disabled

Consider

  • UNCHECK (Disable) Scale content setting when local standard paper size = A4
  • Test and select the setting that provides the desired result

Word document > File > Options > Advanced

Under Print:

Uncheck (Disable) Scale content for A4 or 8.5 x 11" paper sizes

OR

Check (Enable) Scale content for A4 or 8.5 x 11" paper sizes

OK to save any changes
