I'm trying to print in colour a Word doc onto HP Advanced Photopaper (A4 250g/m2) on my HP Officejet Pro 8745 printer. Glossy side down. Nothing I do will cause a successful print. Tried the glossy paper on its own - single sheet - 20 sheets. Tried in on top of normal paper. Each attempt causes either a paper jam or the glossy paper just feeds out without any printing. What's the trick for using this paper?

You are welcome.

The printer might need a good cleaning, though I doubt you would have missed that step.

Officejet Pro 8740

In general, if you can get your hands on it, I found that the HP Brochure paper worked quite well for mixed content Word documents (images / text).  The weight is less (as mentioned, HP Brochure is 180 gsm) - the quality still exceptional.

The paper sensor might be happier if you remove the plain paper and (instead) stack several sheets (8-10) of the photo paper you intend to use.  I also agree that simply placing a sheet on the others might work, though I did generally stack more than a single sheet when mixing media.

For those reading:  I realize we are not supposed to mix media types in a  paper stack.  This printer - in my experience - tolerates the practice, at least to the extent that it would mix brochure / plain paper in a single stack.

If I think of anything else, I will edit this message or post back.

So - the paper should print, yes?

Printer Specifications for HP OfficeJet Pro 8700 Printers

I would guess, because the paper is within the specs, that the error is perhaps due to a missing or misconfigured setting or perhaps you are trying to trick the printer into letting you use Tray 2 for the photo paper (tray 2 is only for plain paper).

Maybe.

Worth checking, at least...

Load the Media into Tray 1

 User Guide

Load Paper - Page 20

Paper and Tray Management - Embedded Web Server (EWS)

After you load the paper, check / adjust the paper size and paper type on the printer.

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

EWS_9025_Preferences_Tray_and_Paper_Management_1EWS_9025_Preferences_Tray_and_Paper_Management_1

Set and Submit the job

There are two places to set / configure the individual printer job,

Word provides the basic setups, including the margins, paper size, orientation, one-two sided, etc.

For example, your Photo paper is only allowed to print "singe" (one) sided.

Margins might be an issue but you would likely be seeing an actual error for margins were that the case...

Assuming you are using (have installed) the printer Full Feature Software),

Word document > File > Print

Under the name of the printer (assumed to be correctly selected),

Click Printer Properties

Select a Printing Shortcut that is "close" to what you need for the job.

Adjust the settings on the right, including

Borderless = Off (generally true for documents)

Paper Type = (One of) HP Photo Papers, HP Brochure Glossy (might not work - Brochure paper is typically 180 GSM - but it is worth trying if nothing else at all is working)

Print on Both Sides (Duplex) = Off

Pages per sheet = 1

Print Quality = Normal

Print in Grayscale = Off

Check / Adjust the settings in the other tabs, too (Paper / Quality , Layout , Advanced)

For example, in Paper / Quality, be sure to select Tray 1 and double check that Paper Type...

NOTE:  I am pulling the examples from my Officejet Pro 9025 - the individual settings might be different in content or location.

If you like, use "Save as" to create a custom shortcut of your new settings.

Click OK to exit the menu

Try printing.

Assuming I did not forget anything, that might do it...

Thanks but still not there. I'm printing from tray 1. All the settings you suggested are OK except for the Printing Shortcut which I hadn't set up. Created one for Advanced Photopaper and succeeded in getting one glossy page printed. Thinking this was the solution I then tried to print more pages and each time failed. The same problem occurs as before - the glossy sheet feeds out - blank, then the printer prints onto a plain A4 sheet which are stacked under the single glossy sheet. In other words I am inserting only one glossy sheet on top of normal A4 paper, but not exceeding the max number of pages per the height of paper guide.

The image on the plan A4 page which immediately follows the glossy page after it's been ejected is perfect

Putting in about eight sheets of Advanced Paper on top of the existing ordinary A4 while (tray 1), and setting up a new default of advanced paper and entering advanced paperat every opportunity WORKED!  Which was the key factor I don't know but we're cooking now. Thanks for your help

Excellent!

You are welcome.

I thought it should work - it is just a matter of hitting it from every side.  Smiling.

Stay safe!
