Hi @ArchiesDundee,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP ENVY 6020e All-in-One Printer only prints outlines of words, it typically indicates an issue with the ink cartridges or the print settings. Here’s how to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:
1. Check the Ink Levels
- Open the HP Smart app or your printer software on your computer to view the ink levels.
- If the ink levels are low, replace the affected cartridge(s).
2. Perform a Printhead Cleaning How to Clean a Printhead for Better Ink Efficiency - HP.com
- Via Printer Control Panel:
- Navigate to the settings or maintenance menu.
- Select Tools or Maintenance and then Clean Printhead.
- Via HP Smart App:
- Open the HP Smart app and select your printer.
- Go to Print Quality Tools and run the Clean Printhead function.
3. Check Print Settings
- Ensure the printer isn’t set to a draft mode or an economy setting:
- Open the print dialog box when printing a document.
- Select Properties or Preferences.
- Choose a higher print quality, such as Best or Normal.
4. Align the Printhead
- Use the HP Smart app or the printer’s menu to align the printhead.
- In the app, go to Print Quality Tools > Align Printhead.
- Follow on-screen instructions.
5. Inspect the Ink Cartridges
- Remove the cartridges and check for:
- Protective tape that wasn’t removed during installation.
- Dirt or dried ink on the contacts.
- Clean the contacts with a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water. Allow to dry before reinserting.
6. Test with a Different Document
- Sometimes, the problem may be related to the document. Try printing a different file to rule out document-specific formatting issues.
7. Update the Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure the printer firmware is up to date via the HP Smart app or the HP support website.
8. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the printer and unplug it for at least 60 seconds.
- Plug it back in and turn it on to reset the hardware.
9. Replace the Cartridge
- If the issue persists, even with sufficient ink, the cartridge itself may be faulty. Replace it with a new, genuine HP cartridge.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
