M209dw
Microsoft Windows Vista

Is there any way I can print to my new HP M209dw printer using my older laptop running Windows Vista?  I use this older laptop primarily for off-line use and would like to print to the new printer via USB cable. I connected the computer to the same wireless network as the printer. It found the printer but could not find a driver. I tried connecting the laptop to the printer via USB cable, and Windows tries to add a driver, but cannot find one.  I tried random drivers (Laserjet PSL5, for example), but it was not successful.  Any ideas on how I could get a driver for basic printing of Word documents from my Vista computer.  This new printer replaces my older HP 5P,  that actually still works fine, but HP stopped selling toner for it and other suppliers toner yields very poor (heavily streaky/dirty) after a few pages. (No issues finding drivers and printing to the HP M209dw with newer Windows 10, iOS, MacOS computers - but this Windows Vista laptop - which I use for mostly off-line use, will not seem to work (even when I put it online to try to get a driver).  Thanks.

That is likely going to be a tough order. This model of printer does not show up as supported by the Universal Print Driver and Vista is old enough that likely Microsoft has not embedded a driver in Windows for it. Networked you might be able to manually install a similar driver by manually creating a TCP/IP port and then using a driver. That is the only suggestion I have.

Thanks Repairatrooper. I bought the new HP M209dw printer as HP stopped selling toner cartridges for my old(er) HP 5P laserjet printer, and the compatibles/refurbished cartridges available yielded poor quality results. I have now ordered a new laptop (Windows 11) that I will use for my online work, and I will retire my current laptop for use offline with the new printer. I already checked that the laptop will print to this HP M209dw printer via USB cable with the laptop/printer not connected to the internet. Some reviewers of the similar HP M209dwe model (with an "e" on the end of the model number)  indicated that they had to have that printer model connected to the internet to successfully print. It was for that reason that I purchased the M209dw model instead.  Overall, it would have been best if HP kept making their OEM toner cartridges for the HP 5P (Toner 03A C3903A). I believe there were many still in service. But, we'll build back better.
