I just replaced the black cartridge in my printer. I followed the directions on the printer and even checked the HP help site but still no printing. The cartridge was new but I am not sure when I bought it. Could it be too old? I have reinstalled the ink several times but no go.

The cartridges may degrade or not print at all after many years of storage. You can check the end of warranty date of the cartridge as shown in the document here. (End of warranty is two years from the manufacture date.) If the cartridge is old and the standard troubleshooting steps have failed try the following:
Remove the cartridge and gently blot the printhead against a damp tissue. A good cartridge will have a strong blot of black ink. If there is no ink, or only a weak smudge of black, check the nozzle tape has been properly removed. In some cases the colored paper tab can separate from the tape, leaving the nozzles covered. If the tape has been removed and the cartridges are old you might try the soak method: get a clean coffee cup and put about 1" of hot (but not boiling) water in it. Put the cartridge in the water with the nozzles down. (This would be in the same orientation the cartridge would sit in the printer.) Let the cartridge soak for ten minutes or so. After the soak remove the cartridge and dry the electrical contacts with a lint-free wipe. A clean coffee filter works well for this.
Next replace the cartridge in the printer and run a few cleaning cycles.

@Bob_Headrick This is perhaps the most useful advice ever given on an HP forum.
