Hi @Jeff3131,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer is displaying an "error" message and won't print, here are some steps to troubleshoot the issue:
Check Printer Status and Error Code:
- Look at the display screen or control panel for any specific error codes or messages. Note these details, as they can help diagnose the problem.
Restart Printer:
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. Sometimes a simple restart can resolve the issue.
Check for Paper Jams:
- Open the paper tray and inspect for any paper jams or obstructions. Clear any paper that might be stuck inside the printer.
Check Ink Cartridges:
- Ensure the ink cartridges are properly installed and not empty. Remove and reinsert the cartridges if necessary. If an ink cartridge is low or empty, replace it with a new one.
Printer Queue:
- On your computer, go to the printer settings and check the print queue. Cancel any stuck print jobs and try printing a test page.
Check Connectivity:
- Ensure the printer is properly connected to your computer or network. Check if it's connected via USB or Wi-Fi, and ensure there are no connectivity issues.
Run Printer Troubleshooter:
- On your Windows computer, go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, select your printer, and click Manage. Then, click on Run the Troubleshooter and follow the prompts.
Update Printer Drivers:
- Visit the HP support website, download the latest drivers for your printer model, and install them on your computer.
Reset Printer to Factory Settings:
- If the issue persists, consider performing a factory reset on your printer. Refer to the printer's manual or HP's support website for instructions on how to reset the printer to its default settings.

I hope this helps.
