I’m experiencing an issue with my HP LaserJet M140we printer. After successfully installing it on my PC and connecting it to the wireless network, a orange exclamation mark appears on the printer, as shown in the first image. When I attempt to print, I receive a notification on my PC stating: "Your printer needs your attention – Printer needs user intervention" . Please advise.
Please advise on how to resolve this issue.

I’m experiencing an issue with my HP LaserJet M140we printer. After successfully installing it on my PC and connecting it to the wireless network, and using it for about a year, it cannot print anymore. An orange exclamation mark appears on the printer, as shown in the first image. When I attempt to print, I receive a notification on my PC stating: "Your printer needs your attention – Printer needs user intervention". Checking from the HP Smart App shows that the Printer has expired. What does that mean?

@Mike_Appiah, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The issue you're experiencing with your HP LaserJet M140we—specifically the orange exclamation mark and the "Printer needs user intervention" message—is likely related to the HP+ subscription or Instant Ink service associated with your printer.
Here’s what’s going on:
What “Printer Expired” Means
Your printer was likely enrolled in HP+, a cloud-based service that requires:
- An active HP account
- A continuous internet connection
- Use of only original HP toner
If the HP Smart App says the printer has "expired", it usually means:
- The HP+ subscription has ended, or
- The printer is no longer associated with a valid HP account, or
- There’s a problem with the Instant Ink subscription (e.g., expired payment method)
When this happens, the printer may block printing entirely, even over USB.
Steps to Fix It
Check HP Account Status
- Go to HP Smart and log in.
- Ensure your printer is listed and your account is active.
- If you used HP Instant Ink, check if your subscription is still valid.
Reconnect the Printer to Your HP Account
- Open the HP Smart App.
- Remove and re-add the printer.
- Follow the prompts to re-link it to your HP account.
Update Firmware
- Visit the HP Software & Drivers page and download the latest firmware for the M140we.
- Install it and restart the printer.
Power Cycle the Printer
- Turn off the printer.
- Unplug it from the wall for 2–3 minutes.
- Plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (not a surge protector).
- Turn it on and wait for it to fully initialize.
Factory Reset (if needed)
- If nothing works, a factory reset might help. Let me know if you’d like the steps for that.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
