After replacing an HP instant ink cartridge and printing 1 file, I got a message saying there was a problem with the printer or ink system.  I turned the printer off, unplugged it, and turned it back on, and got the same message.  I did a system diagnosis on the HP Smart app, and it said no issues were found, but the printer failure message remains.  Is there anything else I can try, or am I just out of luck and need to buy a new printer?

Hi @FLYR47,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your printer is experiencing an ink system issue even after replacing the cartridge. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve this problem:

1. Check the Cartridges

  • Reinstall Cartridges: Remove the cartridges and reinstall them, ensuring they are properly seated.
  • Clean Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth slightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer.
  • Check for Damage: Inspect the cartridges for any damage or leaks.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

3. Reset the Ink System

  • Remove Cartridges: Take out all the ink cartridges from the printer.
  • Power Cycle: With the cartridges removed, turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for a few minutes before plugging it back in and turning it on.
  • Reinstall Cartridges: Reinstall the ink cartridges one by one, ensuring each is properly seated before moving on to the next.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Ensure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can usually update the firmware through the printer’s settings menu or the HP Smart app.

5. Run Printhead Cleaning

  • Use the printer's maintenance menu to run a printhead cleaning cycle. This can often resolve issues related to ink flow.

6. Check for Blockages

  • Inspect Ink Vents: Ensure that the ink cartridge vents are not blocked. If they are, use a pin to gently clear the blockage.
  • Check Printhead: If your printer has a removable printhead, remove it and clean it thoroughly with a lint-free cloth and distilled water.

7. Use HP Diagnostic Tools

  • HP Print and Scan Doctor: Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from the HP website. This tool can diagnose and fix many common printing problems.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
