HP Envy Photo 7855

There is a Question Mark on the display.  The printer has been power cycled multiple times.  HP Smart reports no issues.  (Software/firmware up-to-date.  Genuine HP Cartridges.)

How do I get the Question Mark on the display to go away.

Hi @Theoldwizard1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

The question mark (?) on the HP Envy Photo 7855 display usually means the printer is in a state where it needs user input or guidance, often because:

  • A setup step is incomplete (like region, language, or account sign-in).
  • A feature prompt (HP Instant Ink enrollment, Web Services, or fax setup) is waiting for confirmation.
  • The printer is in Help/Information mode due to a touch or accidental tap.

Since you’ve already power-cycled and confirmed firmware and cartridges are fine, here’s what we recommend to try:

Steps to Clear the Question Mark

1. Tap the Question Mark

  • On the display, tap the? icon.
  • This usually opens the Help menu or a prompt.
  • If it shows a message like “Complete Setup” or “Enable Web Services,” follow the on-screen instructions.

2. Check for Pending Setup

  • Go to Setup > Printer Settings.
  • Confirm:
    • Language and region are set.
    • Wireless setup is complete.
    • HP account sign-in (if using Instant Ink) is done.

3. Disable Help Overlay

  • Sometimes the question mark is an overlay for Help Tips.
  • Go to Setup > Preferences > Help → Turn off Help Display.

4. Update Firmware Again

5. Perform a Soft Reset

  • With the printer ON, unplug the power cord.
  • Wait 60 seconds, plug back in, and restart.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

  • 3. Disable Help Overlay

    • Go to Setup > Preferences > Help → Turn off Help Display.

I can not find Preferences on the display (tiny icons/fat fingers).  Nothing from HP Smart under Preferences.

Even when I log directly into the printer (via hardwired ethernet) there is nothing about turning off the Help Display

I have done both of these !
