The printer goes into sleep mode as expected.
Then a few minutes later the control panel screen lights up without any activity on the computer. After 5 minutes, it then goes into sleep mode again, and so on....
The printer is connected by USB, not wifi. Maybe the computer polls the USB line ocasionally.
Any suggestions?

I am responding on behalf of @MKazi as he is out for the day. It is great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.
I recommend you assign a static IP to the printer and check whether the issue is resolved.
Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can touch the “wireless” icon on the printer control panel to get the IP address.
Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
Go to "Network" tab - General - Select "Network protocols" - Select "Enable IPv4 only" (or similar) - Apply the settings.
Go to the “Network” tab – Click on “Wireless (802.11) – Then click on “Network address (IPv4)
Click on the radio button which says “Manual IP” and then click “Suggest a manual IP address” to give a manual IP address to your printer.
Click on radio button which says “Manual DNS Server” and under manual preferred type 8.8.8.8 and under manual alternate type 8.8.4.4 (This is Google DNS server address)
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Thanks for reaching out to us on the HP Support Forums. MKazi is at your service.
I understand that your HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 3835 All-in-One Printer is connected via the USB cable. I read that the printer wakes up from the sleep ode after 5 minutes without any activity and goes into sleep again. This cycle continues.
Ideally, this should not happen unless there is some data sent to the printer by the computer. You may close any programs on the computer that were using the printer.
Please update the firmware on the printer. The firmware update can be downloaded and installed via this HP link.
NOTE: The printer needs to be restarted once the firmware update is successfully installed.
If the issue still persists then please check the print spooler by following the below steps:
- Press “Windows key” + “r” to get the “Run” window.
- Type "services.msc" to get Services – Go to “Print spooler” – Right-click and “Stop” the service.
- Now again open "Run" - Type “spool” and ok - Go to PRINTERS folder - delete everything in that folder.
- Go to services again - Start the print spooler.
I sincerely hope this information helps. Please feel free to keep me posted for further assistance.
All the best!

Hi MKazi,
Thank you for your help.
Unfortunately, even after updating the printer firmware and handling the spooler, as you suggested, the problem remains.
I even converted the communications to wifi mode, disconnecting the USB, and it still happens.
Please note that even when used in USB mode, the device was a "network" printer, as I have another computer in the network. (I also cleared the spooler in the second computer, as you suggested).
So it looks like something in the network configuration is causing access to the printer from time to time. Both computers on the network are running Windows 10.
Thanks,
Jon
