I'm having the same problem, but worse! After I replaced the black cartridge, I began getting messages that a defective cartrtidge was installed (or someting ike that). After several tries to reseat it, I saw a message that said it was the yellow that was defective. (The ink level is low, but that shouldn't affect the problem.)
Then, I started getting messages that said the cartidges were in the wrong slots.
I spent mostoflast evening and several hours today opening, adjusting the cartridges, and closing the top of the printer, without any success.
I'll call hP Support, as oen of the responders suggested, but I just want to add another log to the flame.
Excuse the typos.

Hi @Mr_Cee,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I understand you are having issues printing after replacing the ink cartridge on your HP DeskJet printer. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I'll need a few more details:
Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges or refilled cartridges?
Have you tried cleaning the cartridge contacts?
In the meantime, let's try these steps here:
Perform a Hard reset on the printer and make sure that the printer is connected directly to the wall outlet and not to the surge protector.
Remove all the ink cartridges and then try to perform a hard reset on the printer.
With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
Remove USB cable, if present.
Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.
Now insert the ink cartridges and then try to print a test page and check if it works.
Next thing, I would suggest here is to follow the steps suggested in the support document for - HP Deskjet 3520 Printers - Ink Cartridge Error
Let me know how it goes for further assistance. I'll be more than happy to help.
Keep me posted,
If the information I've provided was helpful,
give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
that'll help us and others see that we've got the answers!
Good Luck.

Thanks for the tips; I hope never to have to use them. I finally got the printer to work, after many many tries of opening the top and re-inserting the "offending" cartridge (usually yellow); I had even taken the color cartridges to the local Office DEpot, where they exchanged them, even though I had boght them in March. But after I returned home, I still spent an hour re-inserting one or more cartridge.
Excuse the typose, but I'm too mad to proofread.

I had the replacement problem again after I replaced the black ink cartridge. I began to receive error messages that one or more cartridges were missing or damaged. And again, it is the blue and yellow carts. I have followed various steps suggested on the forum and elsewhere, but nothing seems to help, so I am spending my evening opening the printer, resetting the carts., and trying again.
The ink levels are low on the color carts., but that should not make a diference, I hope.
That leads to my next question: we seldom use the color inks, but they seem to be low anyway. Why is that?
I don't understand why HP makes it so difficult to replace cartridges.!!
