Our printer turns off automatically or screen goes blank after 15 minutes. I am trying to find out how to stop this totally.

We moved from MO to NM about five months ago. It did not do this before we moved and now it's totally messing us up. I want the auto turn off and energy saver turned off completely. I've researched and I feel I've done everything I can find on stopping it but I need help to figure this out.

Here is what happens:

When I go to print - before I click on Print, I have to unplug the printer and plug back in before I can print IF it goes into automatic turn off. And sometimes I have to totally delete the printer from my Mac laptop and reset it up.

My husband can only print from his iPhone. It won't print from his Dell laptop now.

The instructions say "The printer will automatically turn off after a period of inactivity to help reduce energy use. This feature is automatically disabled when the printer is connected to a computer or mobile device, a network, or a fax line (if supported)...The Auto-Off setting is preset and cannot be configured." We do have a wireless connection set up on it.

HELP! I have to figure this out or it's going to drive us insane! or we have to get a new printer. I can't deal with this anymore.

Thank anyone who can help me. 🙂

A warm welcome to HP Forums! This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.
Updating the printer firmware and adjusting the Energy saver settings may resolve the issue. Let's  try these steps:

1.) Use the steps available here to update the printer firmware.

2.) Press the Wireless icon on the printer display to view wireless summary. Locate printer IP address or IPv4 address.
3.) Open a web browser on a connected device and type the printer IP address onto the address bar and hit Enter. The EWS information page for the printer opens.

4.) Click Settings tab.

5.) Click Power Management. Disable Schedule On/Off and change the Energy save mode settings to 15 minutes.

6.) Click Apply.

Let me know how it goes!

Hi Senan6806,

Thank you for getting back to me!

I tried that and downloaded it onto my Mac 10.13.6 - a window opens for the HP Firmware Updater - I see my device with the correct IP address and click on it, but the little circle is spinning and won't stop. So I hit Continue while it's still spinning and it says "This Firmware does not contain upgrades for your device."

Next I go to my Mac 10.14 and try it - down load it, window opens for the HP Firmware Updater - I don't see my device there so I go to Add Device Manually and there are two options - Address Type (IPv4, IPv6, Host or Bonjour Domain Name) and Address. I have no idea on what to do next. IF I click on Add Device Manually, the spinning stops like it's paused, and I can't click on the Continue button.

I hope this all makes sense.

Also Senan, I did try to go to Settings and Power Management. I see "After 2 hours" but it doesn't give me the option to click on that and change it. 😞

Try the steps recommended below to disable auto-off on your printer.

In a supported Web browser on your computer, type the IP address or hostname that has been assigned
to the printer.

For example, if the IP address is :192.168.0.12, type the following address into a Web browser: http://192.168.0.12.

Note: The printer must be on a network and must have an IP address. The IP address for the printer can be found by pressing the Wireless icon or by printing a network configuration page.

On the EWS page go to home page and select energy save mode.

Select auto off and check disabled in the options.

Click Apply to save changes.

Keep me posted, how it goes!

Hi Raj,

Per your comment:

On the EWS page go to home page and select energy save mode.

Select auto off and check disabled in the options.

Click Apply to save changes.

I did go there, and there is NO option to disable that option.  I see "After 2 hours" but it doesn't give me the option to click on that and change it.  See the snapshot below. I can't click on anything to disable it.

Thanks, SandyTech...and with regards to your suggestin: You can press the up arrow key or down arrow key next to "After 2 hours" to unjust the Auto-off timings.

Of course, I tried clicking on that. It won't do anything. That is what I'm saying, I can not turn it off because it won't let me click on anything in that area. I honestly don't know what to do.

Do you have any other suggestions?  Thanks!

Thanks everyone for your help! I called HP and they checked, my hardware has gone bad so I can keep doing what I'm doing, unplugging it and plugging it back in when we are ready to use it or go buy a new printer. 😞

Hey, at least I know now. 🙂

Merry Christmas all!
