Hi @Steve343,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To resolve the "Remove and Reinstall Ink Cartridge" error on your HP Envy 7640, you can follow these troubleshooting steps.

Steps to Remove and Reinstall the Ink Cartridge:

Turn off the Printer: Power off your HP Envy 7640 and unplug it from the power source.

Open the Printer: Open the printer's top cover to access the ink cartridges.

Remove the Ink Cartridges:

  • Press down lightly on the black ink cartridge to release it from the holder.
  • Carefully remove the cartridge and set it aside.

Clean the Contacts:

  • Use a soft, lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with water to clean the copper-colored contacts on the ink cartridge and inside the cartridge holder.
  • Allow both the cartridge and the printer's contacts to dry completely before reinstalling.

Reinstall the Ink Cartridge:

  • Insert the black ink cartridge back into its slot, ensuring it's securely in place.
  • Press down gently until it clicks into position.

Close the Printer: Close the printer's top cover.

Power on the Printer: Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

Check for the Error: Print a test page to see if the error persists.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I have done all that.  In the end, in despair, as no-one would answer in technical support, I had to order over the counter print cartridges, and install those.

Hey presto, my printer works again.

I have cancelled my Instant Ink subscription now; I am also shocked that HP are planning on taking more money from me at the end of this month.
