I've tried cleaning both the ink cartridge and connection points in the printer but nothing stops the message from appearing for me. However, just flipping open the cartridge flap and closing it again works and even just lifting the lid and closing it seems to as well, I found by accident. I can queue up printing but after it finishes, it returns to the same error message, so I have to repeat the annoying process. At least I've been able to get by though. Strangely, as of this afternoon, it has been doing a bit better. I wonder if it had something to do with the fact that I'd not used it much until recently, now I am stuck at home!

I have the same problem only I installed a colour cartridge an now the printer doesn’t recognise the black cartridge. I have followed the steps that you said however it is still asking me to re-install the black cartridge.
If I email you the model and serial number would you be able to help me.
Kind regards

I have the exact same issue and have wasted the last two hours trying all these recommended solutions with nothing working. When there is 7 PAGES of complaints on this issue for the last 3 years, you would think HP would put out a fix.
I have a 5740 and my black was not printing at all, so I just installed a brand new HP 62 cartridge and I keep getting the remove and reinstall Ink Cartridge error. When I reinstall the old cartridge (which no ink in it) I do not get this error. Can you help?
