HP website said to download OJ6950_2336A.exe, but when I tried to run the module, I could not select the one printer I have connected. Thus I cannot apply fix. This printer is far out of warranty so I should be able to use any print cartridges that I want to use -- and HP should not prevent that.

Hi @JMG2,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like you are facing an issue with your HP printer and the software provided by HP. Here are a few steps you can try to resolve the problem.
Check Printer Connection:
- Ensure that your printer is properly connected to your computer.
- If it's a wired connection, make sure the USB or Ethernet cable is securely connected.
- If it's a wireless connection, make sure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your computer.
Reinstall the Printer Software:
- Uninstall the existing printer software from your computer.
- Download the latest printer software and drivers from the official HP website.
- Install the newly downloaded software and follow the on-screen instructions.
Use HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- HP provides a diagnostic tool called "HP Print and Scan Doctor" that can help identify and fix printing issues.
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the official HP support website.
Update Firmware:
- Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer on the HP support website.
- Download and install the firmware update if one is available.
Check Cartridge Compatibility:
- Ensure that the ink cartridges you are using are compatible with your printer model.
- Some printers may reject cartridges that are not genuine or not recognized as compatible. In such cases, using genuine HP cartridges may resolve the issue.
Regarding the use of non-HP cartridges, it's essential to note that while your printer may accept third-party cartridges, there can be issues related to compatibility, print quality, and printer functionality. Some printers have mechanisms to detect non-genuine cartridges, and this can lead to problems.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Hi & thanks, Alden4. Most of your suggestions have been done, but don't change my problem. A little more history will explain this. In January of 2023, I ordered my first non-HP ink cartridges for my HP Officejet 6958 printer which I have used for several years. I obtained 2 each of the 4 cartridge types. Over the next months I installed all of the 1st set (not all at once, but as each type became empty). No problems were encountered, but a friend made me aware that HP was planning to start checking for non-HP cartridges.
Recently I I tried to replace the Black and Yellow cartridges with new non-HP cartridges from the same January 2023 purchase. This time the printer rejected both of the new cartridges, saying they had non-HP chips in them. I could put the old nearly empty cartridges back in the printer, which were accepted, but low ink supply. But the old cartridges were still non-HP.
This is why I did Google searches on how to bypass the non-HP check. Some advised turning off the check, but I don't have that option on my 6958. Others said HP now had firmware for 6950 printers that turned off the check. My initial post mentioned that firmware which apparently has a new version (I got all this from HP web pages). But I can't apply that firmware because my printer is "up to date."
If there is a better way for me to use non-HP, please let me know. I can appreciate HP requiring HP cartridges for warranty reasons, but my printer has been out of warranty for some years. Please let me know what I should do.
Thanks,
Jim
