Hi all, I have a HP Smart Tank 7301 All-in-One (Product. 28B70A Serial.Edited).
The printer should be fine - I took it from work because they were going to throw it out because they couldn’t figure it out. I think it was working fine for a while and then just stopped working. When I turn it on there’s a yellow “!” And on the display there’s a symbol of a printer and then two symbols that look like cartridges that are flashing. Ink cartridges are brand new tho.
my wife thinks the WiFi needs to be reset. She was trouble shooting it a few weeks ago but forgets how she came to that conclusion lol, someone may have suggested that I think.

any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi @Mm1215

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for sharing all that—and wow, good on you for rescuing the printer from retirement! That flashing yellow “!” along with the printer and cartridge icons usually points to a printhead issue, not Wi-Fi. Even with brand-new ink, the printer might be struggling to detect or communicate with the printheads properly.

Let’s walk through a few steps to help revive it:

🧼 Step 1: Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the wall and wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug it directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Power it back on and check if the icons stop flashing.

🧪 Step 2: Reseat the Printheads

  • Open the front access door and wait for the carriage to center.
  • Gently lift the latch and remove both printheads (black and tri-color).
  • Wipe the copper contacts with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Let them dry, then reinstall securely and close the latch.
  • Close the door and wait for initialization.

🔄 Step 3: Run Printhead Cleaning

  • If the printer powers up normally, use the HP Smart app or control panel to run a printhead cleaning cycle.
  • This can help clear any dried ink or miscommunication.

🧰 Step 4: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • HP regularly releases new firmware versions for printer enhancements, app updates, or issue fixes. Update the firmware regularly to get the most out of your printer.
  • Click on the link below for instructions on how to update the firmware of your printer.

🧠 Step 5: Check Ink Flow

  • Look at the transparent ink tubes—if the black ink tube looks spotty or has air bubbles, it may not be flowing properly.
  • You can try gently tilting the printer or running a few cleaning cycles to help clear it.

If the flashing icons persist after all this, the printhead might need replacing. But fingers crossed—these steps usually do the trick.

Let me know how it goes, and we’ll keep troubleshooting together!

@Hawks_Eye Thank you for your thorough response! Unfortunately it says “the task could not be completed” when I try to clean the printheads via the app, and manually on the control panel, nothing happens. I also checked the printheads, wiped the contacts etc before doing this. The printer status on the app does say “Printhead Failure

At least one of the printheads has a problem. Check the printheads to make sure they are installed correctly and that the plastic tape covering the nozzles has been removed.”
so I am not sure what else to do!
thanks again!
