My Error 79 problem started back in June with error 79 and continuous reboots. At that time I fixed the problem finally after trying everything in this form. The last thing I did was remove what I thought was a failing wifi extender in another room. After unplugging the extender and rebooting the hp mfp m283, the trouble went away. I thought I had fixed it.
However it has just now reappeared here now it is Sept 2024
And of course this refurbished mf283 is out of warranty.
And I think that HP has let us all down by not fixing this problem.
I can only say, I will think twice before I purchase another HP Laserjet printer.

Hi @bnfoat,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I understand that you are having issues with Service Error 79.
Use the following workarounds.
- Use a LAN connection instead of a wireless connection if possible.
- If a wireless connection is required, remove the toner cartridge from the printer, turn on the printer, insert the toner cartridge, and when the printer is ready, update the Firmware to the latest version from the EWS or use the Firmware Update Utility.
- Turn off the printer, remove the toner cartridge from the printer, and then wait for 30 seconds.
- Turn on the printer, and when the control panel displays Er07, insert the toner cartridge.
- The printer should go back to the Ready mode.
- Press the Information button
to print the Printer Information Report.
- The report contains the printer IP address and printer PIN.
- Open a web browser, enter the printer IP address to access the EWS page.
- Click System, and then enter the user name and password.
- Use admin as user name and printer PIN as password (PIN is available in the Information Report).
- Go to Administration, click the Check Now button in the printer update section to check for a new Firmware update. Update the printer if the new Firmware update is available. New Firmware fixes the Er79 issue.
- If the new Firmware update is not available in step 7, go to support.hp.com to download the latest Firmware Update Utility (version: 20240512).
- If the printer does NOT go to Ready mode at step 3, remove the toner, reset the printer, and then perform the super NVRAM reset on the printer.
- Refer the Super NVRAM reset section to perform the super NVRAM reset. Once the printer boots to Ready mode, use the HP Smart app to set up the printer.
- Once the printer is set up with a wireless connection, follow step 7, 8 to update the Firmware.
If that does not work, let's try NVRAM reset.
The reset instructions are specific to your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.
I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instructions to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
