I was printing on all my devices before getting a new router & now it won't print at all. How do I troubleshoot my ethernet system to see what needs to be fixed? I have the 3830 connected by USB to my Mac Pro. The Mac Pro is connected to the router as well as my MacBook Pro & my iPhone. It printed fine from all devices before the new router was installed. Whats next? Thanks for any advice in advance!

Hi @Jeff2025, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Since your HP OfficeJet 3830 was printing fine before installing the new router, the issue likely stems from network settings that changed with the new router. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and fix the issue:
. Check Ethernet Connections
- Ensure all cables are securely connected: Verify that the Ethernet cables connecting your Mac Pro to the router are firmly plugged in.
- Restart your devices: Power off your Mac Pro, router, and printer. Wait a few minutes, then power them back on.
2. Verify Network Settings
- Check your network settings: Make sure your Mac Pro is correctly configured to connect to the new router. Go to System Preferences > Network and ensure the Ethernet connection is active and properly configured.
- Update drivers if necessary: Sometimes, updating the drivers for your Ethernet adapter can resolve connectivity issues.
3. Printer-Specific Troubleshooting
- Reset the printer's network settings: Since your printer was previously connected to the old network, it might still be trying to connect to it.
1. From the Home screen, touch (Wireless), and then touch Settings .
2. Touch Restore Network Settings.
3. Follow the on-screen instructions. - Use the HP Smart app: Open the HP Smart app on your Mac Pro and follow the steps to set up the printer on the new network.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for your patience! Since your Mac Pro (USB-connected) printer works but network printing (MacBook & iPhone) still doesn’t, the issue is likely related to AirPrint, router settings, or network discovery. Let’s try the following deeper troubleshooting steps:
Confirm Printer Supports AirPrint & Check Bonjour
On your Mac Pro (USB-connected device):
- Open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your HP OfficeJet 3830 and check if it says "AirPrint" under Kind or Use.
- If it’s missing, AirPrint may be disabled on the printer.
Check Bonjour Discovery (This helps Apple devices find the printer)
- Print a Network Configuration Page (Settings > Reports > Network Configuration).
- Look for Bonjour Service Name & Bonjour Status.
- If Bonjour is disabled, enable it via the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS):
- Open a web browser on your Mac Pro.
- Type the printer’s IP address (found on the Network Configuration Page).
- Log in, go to Networking > Bonjour & enable it.
Check Router & Network Discovery
Make Sure the Printer is on the Same Network
- MacBook & iPhone → Connect to the same 2.4GHz Wi-Fi as the printer.
- If you have a dual-band router, disable Smart Connect (which automatically switches devices between 2.4GHz & 5GHz).
Check Router’s Isolation Settings:
- Log into the router admin panel (find this via router manual or ISP instructions).
- Look for Client/AP Isolation, Access Control, or Guest Mode.
- If enabled, disable it so that devices can see the printer.
Manually Add Printer on MacBook
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Click + and select "IP" tab.
- Enter your printer’s IP address (from the Network Configuration Page).
- Protocol: AirPrint (or HP JetDirect if AirPrint doesn’t show up).
- Click Add and try printing.

Reset Network Settings on iPhone
If your iPhone can’t see the printer:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
- Reconnect to Wi-Fi and try printing again.
Try a Test Print via HP Smart App
- Download HP Smart App on MacBook & iPhone.
- Open the app and see if it detects the printer.
- If detected, print a test page from HP Smart.
Assign a Static IP to the Printer
If your router changes the printer’s IP address, devices might lose connection.
- Log into the router’s settings.
- Find DHCP settings & assign a Static IP to the printer.
- Restart all devices.
Try Wi-Fi Direct
If all else fails, use Wi-Fi Direct:
- On the printer, go to Settings > Wi-Fi Direct.
- Enable it & note the Wi-Fi Direct Name/Password.
- Connect your MacBook/iPhone to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network.
- Try printing.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
