Hi,
I have a HP envy 5020 and am having several issues with it,
From my phone it says the printer needs to be optimised and when I go to do so nothing happens and doesn’t print anything, I have tried unplugging and re downloading the app.
I have connected my Chromebook and it is now constantly failing prints halfway through,
it will only print half the page.
HELP!

@Emilia04, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're experiencing multiple issues with your HP Envy 5020, including:
- The HP Smart app on your phone saying the printer needs to be optimized, but nothing happens.
- Your Chromebook prints only half a page or fails mid-print.
Let’s go through a few steps to resolve these issues:
Issue 1: "Needs to be Optimized" Message on Phone
This usually relates to printer health or firmware needing updates. Here's what to do:
Update the HP Smart App:
- Ensure you have the latest version of the HP Smart app installed from the App Store or Google Play.
Restart Devices:
- Power off your phone and printer.
- Unplug the printer for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
Re-add the Printer:
- Open HP Smart > Remove the printer > Tap “+” to re-add it.
- Follow the prompts to complete setup and optimization.
Check for Firmware Updates:
- In HP Smart, go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Tools > Printer Updates.
Issue 2: Chromebook Prints Only Half a Page
This is often due to driver or connectivity issues. Try the following:
Reset the Printing System on Chromebook:
- Go to Settings > Advanced > Printing > Printers.
- Remove the HP Envy 5020.
- Re-add it by clicking Add Printer and follow the prompts.
Use HP Print for Chrome Extension:
- Install the HP Print for Chrome extension.
- This can improve compatibility and print reliability.
Check Print Settings:
- Before printing, click More Settings and ensure:
- Paper size is correct (e.g., A4 or Letter).
- Scale is set to 100%.
- Margins are set to “Default.”
Firmware Update (again):
- Visit the HP Envy 5020 support page and check for firmware updates.
Bonus Tip: Clean Print Heads
If prints are still incomplete, try cleaning the print heads:
- On the printer control panel: Settings > Tools > Clean Printhead.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
