HP smart tank 5102 throws error code e4.  I have attempted all trouble shooting to no avail.  There is no jam and it happens as soon as you put paper in.  Have tried a reset, hard reset, cleaning roller...nothing

@mark808717, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The E4 error on your HP Smart Tank 5102 typically indicates a paper jam, but as you've rightly noted, it can also be a false jam caused by misfeeds, debris, or sensor issues. Since you've already tried a reset, hard reset, and roller cleaning, let's go through a complete step-by-step troubleshooting guide to resolve this:

Check All Jam Locations Thoroughly

Even if no jam is visible, inspect these areas carefully:

  • Input tray – Remove paper, check for debris or misaligned sheets.
  • Output tray
  • Printhead access area – Open the front door and gently slide the carriage to the right. Remove any obstructions.
  • Bottom of the printer – Tilt the printer forward, open the bottom access door, and check for stuck paper or debris.

Clean the Paper Feed Rollers

Dust or fiber buildup can cause misfeeds that trigger false jam errors.

  • Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water.
  • Clean rollers from the rear and input tray areas.

Reset the Printer

Perform a reset:

  • With the printer powered on, unplug the power cord from the back.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power on.

Check Paper Type and Loading

  • Use plain, good-quality paper (not curled or damp).
  • Fan the stack before loading.
  • Ensure paper guides are snug but not tight.

Update Firmware

Outdated firmware can cause sensor misbehavior.
