HP Smart Tank 7002 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 11

Has anyone gotten a straight answer as to why the Smart Tank 7002 AIO scanner light is constantly blinking? (or any other HP AIO, for that matter--I'm seeing several models are also blinking constantly)

I have no issues with this printer as of yet---it doesn't need calibration, ink, paper, new printheads and I've done all the ridiculous things the AI Chat Assistant recommends, to no avail, but it wasn't a cheap buy and I don't want the scanner to prematurely fail from this constant and annoying flashing. I haven't even done a scan yet and it's been blinking 24/7 since I unboxed it weeks ago. 😞

TIA for any replies, gang!

Hi @IconiaGal,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

A constantly blinking scanner light on the HP Smart Tank 7002 AIO is definitely not normal and could indicate a firmware glitch, a stuck calibration mode, or a hardware issue. Since you've already done the usual troubleshooting, let's dig deeper.

Check If It's in Calibration Mode

Some HP AIO printers have an auto-calibration mode that runs periodically, but it should stop after a few minutes.

  • Try opening the scanner lid and closing it to see if the blinking stops.
  • If the blinking happens only when the printer is idle, it might be getting stuck in an endless calibration loop.

Perform a Hard Reset

Even if you've restarted before, try this exact sequence:

  1. Turn off the printer using the power button.
  2. Unplug it completely from power and any USB/Ethernet cables.
  3. Press and hold the Power button for 30 seconds to discharge residual power.
  4. Reconnect only the power cable and turn the printer back on.
  5. Check if the scanner light still blinks.

Update the Firmware

Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware

Disable "Scan to Computer" in HP Smart

Some HP models keep the scanner light on if Scan to Computer is enabled.

  1. Open HP Smart App on your computer.
  2. Click Printer Settings → Scan Settings.
  3. Look for Scan to Computer and disable it.

Factory Reset the Printer

If the issue still persists, refer to the steps on this link to restore factory defaults.
