Brand new printer, has 20 pages printed from it.  We went to use it tonight and there was a blinking exclaimation point and the black print head icon.  The status says that the black print head is missing, but it is obviously there.  I've done what I've read - take out print head, re-seat it, clean contacts with distilled water, etc but it still comes up missing.    Purchased on 5/25/2025.

Hi @GaryE3,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand how frustrating it is to see a blinking exclamation point and black printhead icon on your HP Smart Tank 7300 series printer, especially when it’s brand new and has printed only 20 pages. Let’s walk through a few steps to resolve this issue.

1. Check Printhead Installation

  • Open the ink access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  • Press the blue button to open the printhead cover.
  • Remove the black printhead and reinsert it firmly until it clicks.
  • Ensure the printhead cover is closed securely before closing the ink access door

2. Inspect the Printhead

  • Make sure the protective plugs and tape on the new printhead have been removed.
  • Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles.
  • Hold the printhead upright to prevent ink leakage

3. Clean the Electrical Contacts

  • Power off the printer.
  • Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to gently clean the copper contacts on both the printhead and inside the carriage.
  • Let everything dry for 5 minutes before reinserting.

4. Check Ink Levels and Paper

  • Ensure the ink tanks are at least half full.
  • Load paper into the input tray before retrying.

5. Update Firmware

6. Replace the Printhead (if needed)

If the error persists after reseating and cleaning:

  • The black printhead may be defective.
  • Since your printer was purchased on May 25, 2025, it is under warranty.
  • You may be eligible for a free replacement through HP Support.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
