Hi @Hamdan3rd

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Smart Tank 790 is stuck in a "Checking Ink Tanks" loop after you refilled the ink, which typically happens when the printer is not recognizing the ink tanks properly. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this issue:

1. Check the Ink Tanks and Their Placement

  • Proper Ink Tank Installation: Make sure the ink tanks are properly seated in their slots. If the tanks aren’t fully inserted or if they’re misaligned, the printer may not detect them correctly. Gently remove the ink tanks, inspect the slots and tanks for any damage or ink leaks, then reinstall them.
  • Check the Ink Tank Contacts: The contacts on both the ink tanks and the printer must be clean for proper communication. Wipe the contacts on both the ink tank and the printer using a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly dampened with water. Dry them thoroughly before reinserting the tanks.

2. Perform a Power Reset

Sometimes a simple reset can help clear any error or loop:

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the printer.
  3. Wait for at least 30 seconds to 1 minute.
  4. Plug the power cord back in and turn the printer on.

3. Check for Ink Tank Compatibility

  • Refilled Ink Tanks: If the ink tanks were refilled, ensure that they were refilled properly using the correct ink. Some printers can have trouble with refilled ink tanks, especially if non-OEM ink was used or if the ink levels are too low or incorrectly filled.
  • Genuine HP Ink Tanks: If the refilled ink is causing the issue, try reinstalling the original ink tanks (if available) to see if the issue persists. This will help confirm if the issue is related to the refilled ink.

4. Clean the Ink Cartridge Area

  • Remove Any Obstructions: Inspect the printer’s ink cartridge compartment for any paper or debris that might be blocking the ink tanks from being detected. Ensure that nothing is obstructing the sensor or the area where the ink tanks are inserted.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
