Hi, my SmartTank 7305 (about a year old, has worked well until now) has suddenly started to get stuck on E1 error, Paper size doesn´t match. It does though - I use normal A4 paper and settings for the printer both generally and in the specific application I am trying to print from is set to A4, normal/standard tray, nothing extra. Nothing has changed in my setup or system that could explain the problem.
When I print it starts to roll the paper through and then the paper simply stops before it starts to print and the error code is flashed. If I then cancel the print job it sends the blank paper through and out without any problem. If I repeat this process 10-15 times it sometimes suddenly actually prints the document, but the problem is then back the next time I try to print something.
I have restarted and unplugged numerous times, updated the firmware, opened the printer and checked everything and nothing looks wrong. If anyone has any suggestion I would be very grateful!

Hi @AH73,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with the E1 error on your HP Smart Tank 7305, especially when you've already checked many of the usual troubleshooting steps. The E1 error is typically related to a paper mismatch or alignment issue. Since you’ve confirmed that your settings match the A4 paper you're using, and you've tried unplugging, restarting, and updating the firmware, here are some additional troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve the problem:
1. Reset the Printer's Settings
- Go to the printer's control panel and try resetting the paper settings.
- Manually reselect the paper size to A4 even if it already appears correct. Sometimes, forcing a re-configuration helps resolve alignment or recognition issues.
2. Check the Paper Guides
- Make sure the paper guides in the tray are perfectly aligned with the edges of the A4 paper. If the guides are not snug enough, the printer might not correctly detect the paper size, causing the E1 error.
- Also, try removing the paper from the tray, fanning it to reduce any sticking, and placing it back in.
3. Calibrate the Printer
- Perform a printhead alignment or calibration through the printer’s settings or via the HP Smart app. Sometimes, a misaligned printhead can cause paper feeding and printing errors.
4. Update Printer Driver or Reinstall HP Smart
- Even though your firmware is updated, sometimes a driver issue can cause communication errors.
- Uninstall the HP Smart app and the printer driver from your computer.
- Download and reinstall the latest driver for your Smart Tank 7305 from the official HP website.
- Reinstall the HP Smart app and reconnect the printer.
5. Check for Paper Jams in Hidden Areas
- Even though you’ve inspected the printer, check for tiny pieces of paper or debris in hard-to-reach areas, especially around the rollers and feed mechanism. This could sometimes cause intermittent feed issues.
6. Paper Sensor Cleaning
- Over time, dust or residue might accumulate on the paper size sensor or rollers.
- You can gently clean the sensors and rollers using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water. Be cautious not to damage any internal components.
7. Try Different Paper
- If possible, try using a different stack of A4 paper to ensure that the issue is not caused by minor defects in the paper itself (e.g., slight warping or misalignment in the stack).
8. Use Another Printing Application
- Try printing from a different application or program (e.g., Word, PDF viewer, or even a different browser) to check if the problem persists across all platforms.
9. Factory Reset
- As a last resort, you might consider performing a factory reset on the printer to clear any stored settings or configurations that could be causing this issue.
- Refer to the printer manual for instructions or navigate through the printer’s settings for a reset option.

Hi and thank you very much, I tried a few of the things above and at least for now it seems to work again (I opened the printer and tried (again, but anyway) to clean and check that everything looks and seems to move OK, and I changed the paper (same kind, just a different stack)). I really hope it continues to work, but if not, I´ll try a few of the other things above. Thank you again for your help!
