Sooooo, once again, my printer, which was perfectly fine on the cartridges I was using (also WERE HP cartridges) is now not working.  Nothing prints.  I can scan though.  This happens every time HP wants me to buy a new one.  So a Firmware update was done and it says...

1.   My HP ink cartridge is not HP.  It 100% is an HP ink cartridge.

2.   Says the ink cartridge is not the correct generation, but it was working fine for over 6 months with the same cartridge.

3.  The printer refuses to print and just buffers on the 'jobs' window while nothing actually printing.  It is plugged in via USB and never had a problem before.

I tried to find a way to use the old firmware downloads, but HP out a DMCA so their customers could not do this.  Clever.  So now I am stuck with a piece of plastic that does nor print.  It is an HP 8710 and worked fine until HP thinks I need to upgrade it to something new and will not help because it is out of warranty.  I also found out today that they discontinued the printer itself.   Why though?   I guess 'planned obsolescence' is their main money making strategy?  Why wouldn't they want their products to last?

Countless others have had this issue and HP gives their generic tips, which lead to nothing being resolved.   How can a large company like this be allowed to do this?

Hi @CMOS2022,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 printer after a firmware update. Firmware updates are typically intended to improve the performance, security, and functionality of a device. However, sometimes, issues may arise after a firmware update.

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the problem:

  • Check for Updates: Sometimes, the initial firmware update may have bugs that are fixed in subsequent updates. Check if there are any newer firmware updates available for your printer on the HP website and consider installing them.
  • Rollback Firmware: If you suspect that the issue is specifically caused by the latest firmware update, check if there's an option to rollback or revert to a previous firmware version. This option may not be available for all printers, but it's worth exploring if it is.
  • Factory Reset: Performing a factory reset on your printer can sometimes resolve issues caused by firmware updates. Be aware that this will erase all custom settings on your printer, so you may need to set it up again.

Remember that firmware updates are generally released to improve the performance and security of your device, so it's important to keep your printer's firmware up to date. However, it's frustrating when an update causes issues. Hopefully, one of the steps mentioned above will help you resolve the problem and get your printer working again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
