Dear Sir/Madam:  I recently connected my HP Deskjet F4180 to a new iMac with OS Sonoma 14.5.  When printing I quickly receive an error message "Stopped,....,Filter failed".  While searching for solutions, I found that this is common.  The salesperson sent me a link from HP with directions.  I tried this path carefully multiple times, and I immediately get the same error message.  I could provide the link if needed, but it is very long, and every time I try to copy it, I lose this chat screen.  I suspect that you are familiar with that link and its directions.  I would appreciate any additional assistance.  -Baffled57

Short Answer

Printer is old.

There is no software and little in the way of any other support.

Longer Answer

There has not been any HP software for this printer for a long time.

The last MacOS version even noted in Software and Drivers  is Mac OS X 10.9

Even so, the update noted on the page is from 2014.

Not sure how common the error "Stopped....Filter failed"

I've not seen it.

I don't have anything that has ever generated an error of this type.

?

-- I do read that newer printers might complain of Mac Filter address issues.

In my opinion, the error message is simply a "catch basin" for some type of connection error that the installation software doesn't understand -- program tosses out the answer it has stored in the code.  Meh - Mac Address filtering is done on the router -- In my opinion it is unlikely the router admin is using such a thing without being aware of having set it up.

In my humble opinion,

When you are ready, it might be time to invest in a new printer.

Any brand - HP would be nice --

Just get something you like that is geared to today's environments.

Meanwhile, for now, the HP support Website for this model is still providing data.

If there is anything you want, consider downloading it before it all disappears when the model is officially retired.
